Everyone wants a clean, well-maintained farm or acreage, but few of us want to spend every summer weekend wrestling a string trimmer along kilometres of fence. After discovering an impressively weed-free local fence line, our team went looking for the secrets behind it. What started as a simple herbicide recipe quickly turned into a much deeper look at glyphosate, fence-line weed control, Alberta regulations, costs, safety and environmental risks—and why gasoline, diesel and even goats may not be the easy solutions they first appear to be.
How to Keep Farm & Acreage Fence Lines Weed-Free
There are some jobs around a farm or acreage that aren't particularly complicated. They're just relentless.
Keeping grass and weeds from growing underneath fences is certainly one of them.
Anyone who has spent an entire Saturday feeding string trimmer line into bison wire, page wire or wildlife fencing knows exactly what I'm talking about. The mower gets close, but never quite close enough. Grass grows through the bottom of the fence. The trimmer line catches the wire. You move six inches.
Repeat.
Walk-behind string trimmers sound like the obvious solution until you discover that many of them don't have enough cutting-head offset beyond the wheel track to actually reach underneath a fence. Some useful offset machines and attachments have existed over the years, but the good ones can be expensive, discontinued or surprisingly difficult to find.
Of course, you could buy goats.
They'll certainly eat vegetation.
Unfortunately, once the weeds are gone, goats occasionally broaden their understanding of "vegetation management" to include climbing on vehicles and sampling sheds, houses and practically anything else that looks remotely edible.
There had to be a better option.
Then, while visiting a local museum, we noticed an immaculate fence line that immediately got our attention.
The Fence Line That Started This Investigation
The ground directly underneath the fence and around several outbuildings was essentially clean black dirt.
No grass wrapped around the bottom wire. No waist-high weeds beside the buildings. No obvious evidence that some unfortunate volunteer had spent every previous weekend walking the property with a string trimmer.
There was simply a narrow strip of bare ground beneath the fence, extending far enough outward that a mower could travel alongside it without getting into the wire.
It was exactly the sort of result most acreage owners would happily accept after a long day of yard maintenance.
We eventually managed to speak with someone familiar with the property who was kind enough to pass along the mixture they had been using.
It was based around a 15-litre backpack sprayer.
The 15-Litre Fence-Line Recipe We Were Given
The recipe relayed to us was:
-
12 fluid ounces (approximately 355 mL) of Roundup Transorb HC Liquid Herbicide
-
5 fluid ounces (approximately 148 mL) of Curtail M
-
Water to bring the total mixture to the 15-litre fill mark
For a rough visual reference, 12 fluid ounces is approximately the volume of a standard can of Coke or Pepsi, while five fluid ounces is a little less than half a can.
That comparison is strictly for visualizing volume.
Never measure, mix, transfer or store pesticides in beverage containers, kitchen measuring cups or anything that could later be mistaken for something used with food or drink. Use dedicated, clearly marked chemical measuring equipment and follow the handling instructions on the pesticide label.
More importantly, don't write those numbers on the side of your backpack sprayer and head for the fence just because you're reading them here.
We have personally seen the results produced by this mixture. We are documenting an anecdotal recipe that was shared with us—not presenting it as an approved pesticide application for your property.
Those are two very different things.
The vegetation control we observed was impressive.
But seeing something work doesn't establish whether those particular products, rates, tank mixture and application site comply with their current Canadian labels.
And that's where this simple fence-line story became considerably more interesting.
A Farm Recipe Isn't Automatically an Application Guide
Around rural properties, useful information has always travelled from neighbour to neighbour.
Somebody discovers something that works, tells somebody else, and pretty soon the recipe has been written on the wall of three chemical sheds.
That's valuable practical knowledge.
But pesticides are one area where there's an additional step.
In Canada, Health Canada says the pesticide label specifies the product's approved use and must be followed. The label identifies things such as the treatment location, pests controlled, application directions, precautions and registration number. Using a pesticide contrary to its label directions can violate the Pest Control Products Act.
So an old farm recipe, something your neighbour swears by or a mixture you found online might produce spectacular results and still not be an appropriate application for your property.
That distinction became particularly important once we identified exactly what was in this mixture.
Mystery Solved: The Roundup Was Transorb HC
When we first started researching the recipe, one of our biggest questions was:
Which Roundup?
Saying you used "Roundup" is a little like saying you drive a Chevrolet.
That's helpful up to a point.
But which Chevrolet?
Different glyphosate formulations and concentrations exist, so a volume measurement from one product should never simply be assumed to apply to another.
We have since been able to identify the product used in the observed mixture as Roundup Transorb HC Liquid Herbicide.
That gives us considerably more useful information.
According to current Bayer Crop Science Canada information, Roundup Transorb HC is a Group 9 glyphosate herbicide supplied as a water-soluble 540 g/L liquid concentrate. Bayer lists a broad spectrum of annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds among the vegetation controlled by the product.
That helps explain a substantial part of what we saw underneath that fence.
Why Knowing It Was Transorb HC Matters
Knowing the exact formulation matters because the original recipe contained approximately 355 mL of a 540 g/L glyphosate product in the finished 15-litre tank.
That's useful information for documenting what was reportedly used.
But there is an important catch.
Tank concentration isn't the same thing as application rate.
Knowing somebody put 355 mL into a 15-litre backpack doesn't tell you how much product was actually applied per hectare, acre or square metre.
Imagine two people carrying identical backpack sprayers.
One walks quickly while applying a narrow strip.
The other walks slowly, uses a different nozzle and thoroughly wets a strip twice as wide.
Same chemical.
Same 15-litre tank.
Same recipe.
Completely different amount of herbicide applied to the ground.
That's one reason copying somebody else's backpack-sprayer concentration without knowing the area they treated can be misleading.
What Glyphosate Actually Does
Identifying Transorb HC also helps answer something that has frustrated me about glyphosate for years.
You can spray grass, watch it die, admire the wonderfully clean ground and congratulate yourself on finally winning.
Then you walk past the fence several weeks later.
Grass.
Again.
The obvious reaction is:
Apparently I didn't use enough.
But that's not necessarily the problem.
Glyphosate is a systemic, non-selective herbicide used to control susceptible growing vegetation. Killing the plants growing there today doesn't magically remove every viable seed from the soil or prevent vegetation from arriving tomorrow.
A fence line can be recolonized through:
-
seeds already present in the soil;
-
windblown seeds;
-
birds and wildlife;
-
surrounding grasses;
-
creeping roots and rhizomes;
-
machinery and vehicle traffic; and
-
runoff carrying seeds and organic matter.
Ironically, removing the existing vegetation can leave behind a wonderful open seedbed with sunlight and very little competition.
Nature doesn't generally look at six inches of bare dirt and think:
"Someone obviously wants that empty. We'd better leave it alone."
Something eventually tries to occupy it.
And simply increasing the amount of pesticide isn't the answer. Health Canada notes that exceeding a pesticide's labelled application rate doesn't necessarily improve results.
That changes the question.
Instead of asking:
What can I spray once that will permanently kill everything underneath my fence?
A much more useful question is:
What combination of vegetation control, equipment and maintenance gives me the cleanest fence line for the least money, labour and risk?
That's a much more realistic acreage-maintenance problem.
What About the Curtail M?
The second ingredient in the reported recipe was Curtail M.
According to its current Canadian label, Curtail M is a Group 4 commercial agricultural herbicide containing:
-
clopyralid — 50 g/L
-
MCPA — 280 g/L
-
PCP Registration No. 30914
Its label describes selective control of broadleaf weeds in specified agricultural crops and identifies geographical restrictions on where the product is sold for use.
That isn't the same thing as saying:
"Curtail M is a general-purpose bare-ground fence-line herbicide."
And that's an important distinction.
Why the Combination May Have Looked So Effective
From a vegetation-control standpoint, it's not difficult to understand why someone might have been impressed by the combination.
Transorb HC is a non-selective glyphosate product capable of controlling many grasses and broadleaf weeds, while Curtail M contains herbicides intended to control troublesome broadleaf weeds.
Put different herbicidal tools together and impressive vegetation suppression isn't particularly surprising.
But once again:
Biological effectiveness does not automatically establish that a particular tank mixture, rate and application site are permitted.
That's something every acreage owner should keep in mind when hearing about a "great weed-killing recipe."
Tank Mixing Rules Became Even More Important in 2025
There is another reason we're being careful about presenting the original mixture.
Health Canada clarified its pesticide tank-mixing requirements, with the current rules requiring users to follow what the product labels actually permit.
As of December 20, 2025, a tank mixture must be supported by appropriate label language. Health Canada's guidance explains that tank mixing may be permitted through a specifically identified partner or through an approved general tank-mixing statement. If labels don't support the combination, you shouldn't assume that two registered pesticides can simply be combined because each is legal on its own.
Where a permitted mixture involves different requirements on the two labels, Health Canada says the most restrictive requirements must be followed.
That includes considerations such as:
-
directions for use;
-
application rates;
-
precautions;
-
restrictions;
-
environmental precautions; and
-
spray buffer zones.
So we're deliberately leaving the Transorb HC and Curtail M mixture in this article as an observed and reported recipe, rather than turning it into our own recommendation.
The responsible way to reproduce the result isn't necessarily to reproduce the recipe.
Before Spending Hundreds of Dollars on Chemicals
Then there's the financial side of fence-line weed control.
Commercial-sized herbicide containers aren't cheap.
Prices vary by retailer, year, package size and local agricultural market, so any price quoted here would become outdated fairly quickly. But it's remarkably easy to have several hundred dollars worth of product sitting in the chemical storage area before you've treated the first fence post.
That's another reason I wouldn't start by buying chemicals.
I'd start with the problem.
Take a few photographs of the weeds and fence to a knowledgeable agricultural chemical retailer, agronomist or municipal Agricultural Service Board/agricultural fieldman.
Explain exactly what you're trying to accomplish:
"I have grass and mixed weeds growing underneath a rural fence. I want a narrow vegetation-free strip so I can mow alongside it. What currently registered product is appropriate and labelled for this application, and am I permitted to purchase and use it?"
That's a considerably better question than:
"What's the strongest Roundup you've got?"
Health Canada also recommends checking that the product is registered in Canada, that the intended pest and treatment location appear on the label, and that you're authorized to use the product.
Calibrate the Backpack Sprayer Before Adding Herbicide
This may be one of the most useful things acreage owners can do.
Before adding pesticide, fill the backpack with plain water.
Then:
-
Mark a known distance along the fence.
-
Decide how wide the treatment strip actually needs to be.
-
Fill the sprayer with a measured quantity of water.
-
Spray the test section at your normal walking speed.
-
Use the same nozzle, pressure and spray pattern you intend to use later.
-
Measure how much water was consumed.
-
Calculate the area you actually treated.
-
Compare that information with the application directions on the exact pesticide label.
Now you have useful numbers.
You know approximately how many litres of carrier water you apply over a known area.
Only then can a labelled product rate be translated meaningfully into the amount required for your sprayer and treatment area.
That little water test tells you considerably more than knowing somebody else put 12 ounces into their backpack.
Don't Ignore the Nozzle
Application equipment matters too.
As of 2026, Health Canada specifically reminds pesticide users that where a label specifies a spray-droplet category, that requirement is mandatory. Droplet size can influence both treatment effectiveness and the potential for spray to move into non-target areas.
So don't automatically install whatever nozzle happens to be rolling around in the bottom of the toolbox.
Follow the label for the product you're actually using.
Your Neighbour's Side of the Fence Matters
A six-inch strip of weed control sounds wonderfully precise.
The wind may have other ideas.
Spray drift can turn a carefully planned fence-line treatment into injured garden plants, shelterbelt trees, crops or other desirable vegetation.
Before spraying, look beyond the wire.
What's there?
-
somebody's garden?
-
trees?
-
shelterbelt?
-
crop?
-
hay field?
-
pasture?
-
dugout?
-
livestock?
-
somebody's yard?
Precision should be the objective.
You aren't trying to discover how far the backpack sprayer can throw herbicide.
You're trying to put the labelled amount exactly where the label permits it to go.
And don't spray simply because Saturday happens to be the day you have free.
Weather gets a vote.
Water Changes Everything
Fence lines have an unfortunate habit of following property boundaries rather than conveniently staying on high, dry ground.
That means they may pass near:
-
wells;
-
dugouts;
-
wetlands;
-
creeks;
-
culverts;
-
drainage channels;
-
seasonal waterways; and
-
low areas carrying spring runoff.
Before treating a long fence, walk it.
Know where water comes from and where it goes.
A treatment that might make sense underneath a dry fence beside a yard could be completely inappropriate farther down the same fence where it crosses a drainage course.
Product labels may contain specific environmental precautions, buffer zones and runoff requirements. These aren't optional extras.
The simple rule is:
Know where your water is before deciding where you're spraying.
Livestock Make Fence-Line Weed Control More Complicated
Rural fences generally exist because there's something on one side that shouldn't be on the other.
Cattle.
Horses.
Bison.
Sheep.
Or goats plotting their next escape.
That means fence-line vegetation management also needs to account for:
-
grazing restrictions;
-
haying restrictions;
-
access to treated vegetation;
-
re-entry requirements;
-
neighbouring livestock; and
-
animals reaching underneath or through the fence.
Don't assume that because something is an agricultural herbicide, it can automatically be applied anywhere agricultural animals happen to live.
Read the applicable label requirements before spraying, not after discovering your prized 4-H cow happily eating the treated grass.
Health Canada similarly advises keeping people and pets away during pesticide treatment and following the label regarding when they can return.
PPE Matters More With a Backpack Than You Might Think
A 15-litre backpack sprayer feels relatively harmless compared with a giant field sprayer.
But think about what's actually happening.
You're measuring concentrate around waist height, pouring it into a relatively small opening and then strapping the entire container to your back.
Leaks happen.
Splashing happens.
Hoses fail.
Caps occasionally don't get tightened properly.
The required personal protective equipment depends on the exact pesticide and application, so follow the label rather than relying on a generic PPE list.
Good habits include:
-
keeping dedicated pesticide measuring equipment;
-
leaving pesticides in their original labelled containers;
-
clearly identifying herbicide sprayers;
-
preventing backflow while filling;
-
having spill-control materials available;
-
not eating, drinking or smoking while handling pesticides;
-
following label directions for equipment cleanout and container disposal; and
-
keeping children, pets and livestock away from mixing and loading areas.
Health Canada specifically advises reading all warnings and label directions before use and never mixing pesticides unless permitted by the label.
What About Gasoline or Diesel?
Eventually nearly every rural weed-control conversation arrives here.
Somebody says:
"Just spray diesel on it."
Or gasoline.
After all, many acreage owners already have one or both sitting around.
It sounds inexpensive.
I wouldn't do it.
Gasoline Creates a Different Problem
Gasoline is highly volatile and flammable.
Putting it onto soil around dry vegetation, wooden posts, machinery and buildings creates an unnecessary fire risk.
Then there's the environmental problem.
If petroleum gets into soil or water, you no longer have a fence-line weed problem.
You have a petroleum-contamination problem.
That's not an improvement.
Diesel Isn't the Clever Loophole Either
Diesel is less volatile than gasoline, which can make it seem like the sensible rural alternative.
But it's still petroleum.
It gets onto boots, equipment and soil, and deliberately applying fuel to the ground isn't a vegetation-management system I'd recommend.
My conclusion is simple:
Keep gasoline and diesel in the tractor, mower and fuel cans where they belong.
You Probably Don't Need a Three-Foot Dead Zone
One thing we liked about the original fence was how narrow the vegetation-free strip was.
The objective isn't to turn the perimeter of your acreage into the surface of the moon.
You need enough clearance to prevent vegetation from tangling through the wire and enough room to run the mower alongside without hitting the fence.
Depending on your equipment and fence design, that may only require a relatively narrow strip.
Keeping it narrow means:
-
less product where chemical control is appropriate;
-
lower cost;
-
less exposed soil;
-
less potential erosion;
-
less risk to desirable plants; and
-
less bare ground available for new weeds to colonize.
Measure the clearance you actually need.
Don't automatically spray three feet because three feet is easier to see.
Chemical Weed Control Isn't the Only Answer
After researching all of this, I don't think there is one perfect fence-line weed-control system for every acreage.
The best solution may combine several approaches.
Mechanical Trimming
String trimmers and brush cutters remain perfectly reasonable for short fences or environmentally sensitive areas.
The disadvantages are familiar:
-
time;
-
trimmer line;
-
wire;
-
more trimmer line; and
-
several hours wondering why nobody has invented a machine that does this properly.
Better Fence-Line Equipment
For kilometres of fence, equipment specifically designed to reach underneath or around posts starts making considerably more sense.
Offset trimmers, fence-line mowers and purpose-built tractor attachments can solve the problem mechanically.
Unfortunately, some of the most useful machines are uncommon, expensive or discontinued.
Used equipment listings may be worth watching.
Although anyone who has bought enough used farm equipment knows the old rule:
Nobody gets rid of a perfectly good piece of equipment without some reason.
Finding that reason is the exciting part.
Gravel or Crushed Rock
Around buildings, yards, gates and other high-maintenance areas, a properly prepared gravel or crushed-rock strip may reduce vegetation establishment.
It costs more upfront but can reduce repeated trimming.
Eventually organic material accumulates and weeds discover the gravel anyway.
Nothing involving acreage maintenance stays maintenance-free forever.
Geotextile and Physical Barriers
Landscape fabric or geotextile underneath aggregate can help suppress vegetation in suitable locations.
I'd be cautious with exposed fabric around livestock.
Once frost, machinery or animals pull an edge loose, you've traded a weed problem for a shredded-fabric problem.
Sometimes Keeping Vegetation Is Better
Bare soil isn't automatically an improvement.
Vegetation stabilizes soil and can help reduce erosion.
On slopes, drainage areas and environmentally sensitive locations, maintaining short vegetation may make far more sense than attempting to maintain bare ground.
The perfect solution underneath a level yard fence might be completely inappropriate beside a creek.
A Fence-Line Weed-Control Checklist
Before putting herbicide into a sprayer, these are the questions I'd want answered:

What am I actually trying to control? Grass, thistles, brush or everything?
-
What exact product am I using? Product name, formulation, active ingredient and PCP registration number.
-
Does its current Canadian label permit my intended application?
-
Am I legally permitted to purchase and use it?
-
What application rate does the label specify?
-
How much area does my sprayer actually cover?
-
Is my equipment properly calibrated?
-
Does the label specify nozzle or droplet requirements?
-
If I'm tank mixing products, is that mixture permitted under the applicable labels?
-
Can livestock or pets access the treated vegetation?
-
Are there grazing, haying or re-entry restrictions?
-
Where are the wells, dugouts, wetlands and drainage routes?
-
What's growing on the neighbour's side of the fence?
-
Are weather and wind conditions suitable?
-
What PPE does the label require?
-
Where will I fill and clean the equipment?
-
What's my plan when vegetation eventually comes back?
If several answers are:
"I don't know,"
that's probably a good indication that the sprayer shouldn't be filled yet.
What I'd Do Before Treating My Own Fence
Seeing that immaculate fence convinced us that chemical vegetation management can produce the clean, low-maintenance result many rural property owners are after.
Researching the recipe convinced us of something else:
We wouldn't simply copy it.
Instead, I'd start by identifying exactly what vegetation I'm dealing with.
Then I'd measure how wide a vegetation-free strip I actually need.
I'd photograph the problem and take those pictures to a knowledgeable agricultural chemical retailer, agronomist or municipal agricultural fieldman.
I'd ask for a currently registered product appropriate for the intended site and target vegetation.
Then I'd verify the exact product and current label rather than relying on an old jug, an internet post or somebody's memory. Health Canada recommends checking the PCP registration and current label information before use.
After that, I'd calibrate the sprayer with water.
And then I'd keep records.
Photograph the same marked sections after:
-
one week;
-
one month;
-
two months;
-
three months; and
-
the following spring.
That's when this becomes a genuinely useful acreage experiment.
Calculate Cost Per 100 Metres, Not Cost Per Jug
I'd actually take the experiment one step further.
Pick equal 100-metre sections of fence and compare:
-
properly labelled chemical vegetation control;
-
mechanical trimming;
-
gravel or another suitable physical barrier; and
-
conventional mowing and trimming.
Record the material cost.
But also record your time.
Then calculate the annual cost of maintaining 100 metres of fence with each method.
That's the number that actually matters.
A $170 container isn't necessarily expensive if it lasts for years and saves dozens of hours.
A $20 solution isn't necessarily cheap if you have to repeat it every two weeks and spend the entire summer walking behind a string trimmer.
The cost of the container isn't the same thing as the cost of maintaining the fence.
The Real Lesson From That Perfect Fence Line
We went down this rabbit hole because we happened across an unusually clean rural fence line and wanted to know the secret.
Eventually, we were given the mixture reportedly being used:
12 fluid ounces of Roundup Transorb HC, five fluid ounces of Curtail M and water to make 15 litres.
From what we personally observed, the resulting vegetation control was impressive.
And we eventually solved one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the recipe.
The Roundup wasn't just some unidentified jug.
It was Roundup Transorb HC, a concentrated 540 g/L Group 9 glyphosate herbicide.
But identifying the chemical doesn't turn the original recipe into an application recommendation.
Curtail M is a separate commercial agricultural herbicide with its own registered uses and restrictions. And Canada's current tank-mixing rules require the applicable pesticide labels to support the mixture.
So the most useful lesson wasn't the recipe.
It was learning how to approach the problem.
Start with the result you want. Identify the vegetation. Find a product legally registered and labelled for the job. Calibrate your equipment. Follow the current label. Treat only as much area as necessary. Then measure how long the results actually last.
And gasoline or diesel?
Keep them in the equipment they were purchased to operate.
Because the objective isn't to discover the strongest possible way to kill vegetation.
It's to find the lowest-cost, lowest-labour and lowest-risk way to stop grass and weeds from swallowing the fence every summer.
If that saves us from spending every weekend feeding expensive trimmer line into bison wire, I'm interested.
And if it means we don't have to buy goats and subsequently discover one standing on the hood of the truck while another eats the shed, that's an additional benefit.
What Works on Your Fence Line?
Every farm and acreage runs a little differently, and some of the best rural solutions come from people who have already tried them—and occasionally learned the hard way.
